Pleasantville Elementary/Colonial Parent Resources

Pleasantville’s Website-Our home page provides links to the school calendar, staff listings (with links to email and teacher web pages), lunch menu, and many other informational items that you will find useful as a parent or potential parent of a Pleasantville student.

ESchool Plus-The ESchool Plus program is used by students and parents to communicate regarding student progress. Teachers access the password protected site to enter student grades and attendance. Students and parents can then view the grades and attendance information as it is updated. The program is also used by the school staff to maintain contact and transportation information.

MyNutriKids-This website allows parents to manage their child’s lunch account. Go the MyNutrikids.com site. From this site you will create your account and add money to your child’s school meal account. All you need is your child’s name, student ID number and school ZIP code.

Colonial School District-Our district’s site provides additonal resources for parents of Colonial children and information for those parents looking to enroll in the Colonial School District.

Highly Qualified Staff-Pleasantville is proud of it’s highly qualified teaching staff! To view information about your child’s teacher certification, you can go to the DEEDS website. Once you access this website, type the name of your child’s teacher. This site lists the teacher’s license and certificate(s), degree(s) with major and minor, teaching position and teacher quality.   

Resources for Helping Your Child Improve Academically

Reading and Other Academics-If you are interested in learning more about reading and helping your child to improve his/her reading ability, visit these sites. They provide parents and educators with current research and strategies for teaching reading and early literacy skills. Additionally, you will find a link for information about one of our Math resources. If you are looking for websites with activities for your children go to Resources for Kids.

Reading is Fundamental-(RIF) is an excellent resource for parents that provides tips and advice for parents working with babies through teens. Additionally, the site provides a variety of ideas and activities for children.

Reading Rockets-Reading Rockets is an excellent site for parents looking to expand their knowledge of the reading process and it also provides tips and ideas for parents to help their children improve their reading.

The Florida Center for Reading Research-This website gives an overview of the research behind the current reading philosophy. It also helps parents to understand the essential 5 components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

National Reading Panel-This website provides parents and teachers with information about the National Reading Panel. This organization was designed to ”assess the effectiveness of different approaches used to teach children to read.”  

Internet for Classrooms-This site offers assistance and activities for students and parents in all subject areas. It is a great resource for students, parents, and teachers to use for all subject areas. It includes a section entitled, ‘technology tutorials’, which helps anyone who needs assistance with developing skills in technology areas.

Story Town/Think Central-Houghton-Mifflin/Harcourt’s Story Town Reading program that we utilize as our core curriculum. The program is a comprehensive program that provides activities to support the struggling reader and challenge our most gifted students. The ‘Think-Central’ website allows students, parents, and teachers to access many different materials such as the reading anthologies and other activities to support student learning. Each child and teacher has an individual password that can be used to access the information from this website.

FASTT Math-During the spring of 2009, we adopted the FASTT Math program to supplement the Investigations curriculum. FASTT Math challenges our 2nd to 5th grade children to increase their fluency in completing the basic math concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The teachers are able to utilize the report portion of the program to evaluate student progress. This website provides an overview of the program and it’s functions.

Information on Character Education Programs at Pleasantville  

Project Wisdom-Project Wisdom is a character education program that we have incorporated at Pleasantville Elementary. The program is centered around positive concepts such as: respecting self/others, creating goals, making positive choices, and following the ‘Golden Rule’. At the website, parents will find more information about the program and teachers will find activities to supplement the daily messages.

Responsive Classroom-At Pleasantville, we have adopted the Responsive Classroom (RC) approach to assist us in building and maintaining a safe and welcoming atmosphere. The RC approach begins with daily morning meetings in each classroom which helps to set a positive tone for the day. The social and academic learning components of RC are then integrated throughout the school day. This website offers visitors an overview of the components and other resources.

Love and Logic-Many Love and Logic strategies are integrated when working with our children at Pleasantville. We also offer Parent Workshops to assist parents in working with their children at home. This website provides an overview of the Love and Logic approach as well as information for additional resources.

Bullying.org-A wonderful website that offers advice and strategies on handling bullies at school and at home. The site is great for families and educators alike who are working to create a bully-free climate.
